Introduction

Floodlights come in a range of sizes and power ratings. Floods can be grouped into two main categories - ordinary and linear. The difference between the them is the shape of bulb they use. Ordinary floodlights use incandescent bulbs like those found in the home. Linear floods use tungsten halogen bulbs similar to those found in domestic security lighting.
Floods are available as single fixtures or in pre-assembled groups of three or four - if those groups are positions on the floor they are known as "groundrow", if they hang from the grid they are known as "battens".

Floodlights have no optics at all. They are used indiscriminately flood areas of the stage with light (hence the name!) and, as such, the designer has only pan and tilt to work with.
Floodlights are generally used as groundrow and batten to light cyclorama (large walls or canvas sheets coated with reflective paint), though they can be used over the stage if their wide spread can be tolerated.
